Make a difference this March Madness

March Madness is here! It’s been a few years since I was on the court for the University of Tennessee, but I can still vividly remember the energy, nerves, and excitement that so many college basketball players are feeling right now. 

But while champions are named in March, the hard work and mentorship leading up to the “big dance” are what can really make a difference for athletes on and off the court. 

Sports have the power to transform lives, from providing structure and discipline to finding connection and belonging. That's why I'm so excited about Home Court at The Obama Presidential Center, an athletic center The Obama Foundation is building at the Center’s campus. It'll be a space where kids can develop their skills, build confidence, and learn lessons that last a lifetime.

When I think of some of the people who have made the biggest impact on my life, my University of Tennessee coach, Pat Summit, is one of those people who come to mind.

Coach Pat was more than just a coach—she was a mentor who taught me how to show up as a leader. Her pregame motivational speeches, one-on-one talks, and post-game debriefs gave me lessons that have stuck with me through every stage of my life and things I will pass down to my children.

Because of people like Coach Pat, I know how impactful mentorship can be, which is why I’m proud to support The Obama Foundation. From the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance to their programs engaging youth in Chicago, The Obama Foundation is helping empower the leaders of tomorrow.
